30-15 Intermittent Fitness Test (30-15 IFT)

Determine Maximal Intermittent Running Velocity (VIFT) to individualize high-intensity interval training (HIIT)

Primary measureVIFT (km/h)
CategoryIntermittent Endurance
FormatPROGRESSIVE
Pacing audio0.01s Calibrated

Standardized testing protocol

30 seconds of shuttle running between lines A, B, and C interspersed with 15 seconds of passive/walking recovery. The test starts at 8.0 km/h (or 10.0 km/h) and running speed increases by 0.5 km/h for each successive 45-second stage. The test terminates when an athlete is unable to reach the designated 3-meter tolerance zone at the audio beep on three consecutive occasions.

Required field equipment

40-meter flat course with 3 marker lines at 0m (A), 20m (B), and 40m (C), 3m recovery zones, cones, Time4Test audio soundtrack

Calculation formula & scoring

Time4Test automates this equation directly during the session:

VO2max (ml/kg/min) = 28.3 - (2.15 × 1) - (0.741 × age) - (0.0357 × weight) + (0.0586 × age × VIFT) + (1.03 × VIFT). Score is VIFT (km/h).
