Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test Level 1 (Yo-Yo IR1)

Estimate performance in stop-and-go sports; measure capacity for intermittent aerobic exercise

Primary measureDistance (m) or Level.Circuits
CategoryIntermittent Recovery
FormatPROGRESSIVE
Pacing audio0.01s Calibrated

Standardized testing protocol

Runners complete 20m shuttle runs (5m to 25m and back to 5m) at incrementally increasing speeds. A 10-second active rest is taken between each 40m circuit by strolling to the 0m marker and returning to the 5m marker. Two consecutive failures to reach the marker in time terminate the test.

Required field equipment

25-meter track with markers at 0, 5, and 25m, audio source with double-beep cue, flat surface

Calculation formula & scoring

Time4Test automates this equation directly during the session:

Score recorded as Speed Level.Circuits or Total Distance. VO2max = (Final distance (m) × 0.0084) + 36.4.

Protocol note

The app does not count the last two shuttles in the final score calculation because the test ends after two consecutive failures.
